The Los Angeles Yue Opera Troupe was established in 2003 with the full support of the Shanghai Association of Southern California and under the strong advocacy of senior Yue Opera artists such as Xu Yulan, Fu Quanxiang, Wang Wenjuan, and Jin Caifeng. It is the only nonprofit, non-professional troupe in Los Angeles that focuses primarily on performing and promoting Yue Opera. The troupe was originally named the Yue Opera Salon of the Shanghai Association and was formed by former professional performers and devoted enthusiasts of Yue Opera. The founder and first director was Wang Jianhua, an overseas disciple of the renowned Yue Opera artist Xu Yulan. The current director is Zhan Xiaoling, and two deputy directors are Lian Yuye and Wei Fang. Lian Yuye is a disciple of Yuan Xuefen and a former acclaimed actress of the Shanghai Yue Opera House. Troupe members come from various parts of China. Over the years, the troupe has invited senior Yue Opera artists such as Xu Yulan, Fu Quanxiang, and Jin Caifeng to serve as artistic advisors.

Over the past two decades, the Los Angeles Yue Opera Troupe has assisted in organizing and inviting renowned Yue Opera performers from three generations of the Shanghai Yue Opera House to visit the United States and share the stage in joint performances. Artists who have performed in the U.S. include Fu Quanxiang, Wang Wenjuan, Jin Caifeng, Qian Huili, Zhao Zhigang, Shan Yangping, Chen Ying, Shen Yulan, Zhang Ruihong, Han Tingting, Yang Tingna, Zhang Yufeng, Wu Qun, Wang Rousang, Xin Yaqin, and Sheng Shuyang, among others. Since 2006, the troupe has focused on discovering and cultivating local talent in the U.S., and has independently produced large-scale Yue Opera performances. In 2006, the troupe held a special performance commemorating the 100th anniversary of Yue Opera. In 2007 and 2008, it presented the classic Yue Opera “Dream of the Red Mansions”. In 2008, it organized a charity performance featuring Yue Opera stars in support of post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan. In 2009, the troupe participated in the large-scale cultural gala “Meet in Shanghai”. In 2010, the troupe held a special event titled “Welcoming the World Expo”, and In 2011, presented a personal showcase performance “Dream Chasing”. In 2018, the troupe presented the classic Yue Opera “The Romance of the West Chamber”. These performances attracted wide media attention in both Los Angeles and Shanghai. The Documentary Channel of Shanghai TV sent a team to Los Angeles to film a documentary titled “There Is a Yue Opera Troupe in America”, which aired multiple times in Shanghai and received enthusiastic responses. In 2013, CCTV filmed the 3D documentary “Global Chinatowns”, in which the Los Angeles Yue Opera Troupe was prominently featured. Since 2013, the troupe has continued to host an annual “Yue Opera Night” featuring selected scenes from classic Yue Opera works. These events include bilingual subtitles and hosts in both Chinese and English, actively promoting Yue Opera and traditional Chinese culture in the United States.

In addition to hosting large-scale performances, the troupe also participates in smaller performance events. Over time, the audience has expanded from a core group of Yue Opera and Chinese opera enthusiasts to include a broader segment of mainstream American society. The troupe fosters friendships through the art of Yue Opera, holding regular activities, and providing training and guidance in singing techniques and stage movements with the help of experienced professional performers. Apart from rehearsals and skill exchanges, the troupe also organizes social activities such as family gatherings and camping trips. We warmly welcome all Yue Opera enthusiasts to join our community!
