During the Jian'an period, Jiao Zhongqing, a minor official in Lujiang Prefecture, had just gotten married. His relatives and neighbors praised his new bride, Liu Lanzhi, likening the couple to a pair of peacocks. However, Liu Lanzhi failed to win the approval of Jiao's mother, who believed she was too "arrogant" and "lacking in etiquette", and she yearned for a beautiful and wealthy woman from Hedong to be her son's wife, intending to drive Lanzhi away and choose another high-born lady for her son. Three years later, she finally used an excuse to force Zhongqing to divorce Lanzhi.

“Vow of the peacock” tells the sudden change in fortunes for Zhongqing and Lanzhi, which struck them like a bolt from the blue, causing immense sorrow. As Jiao Zhongqing rushed to bid farewell to Liu Lanzhi, the two of them made a solemn vow, like rocks and reeds tied together, never to break their bond.
